Fat Cat? :)

We here at Creature Comforts of Charlotte Pet Sitting see ALL kinds of animals. Some are thin, some are average, some are heavier than average. Indoor cats generally have a harder time keeping weight off than dogs and outdoor cats, just for the sheer exercise factor.

Are you concerned that your cat has put on some extra pounds and wish to get her some exercise? Obviously, a treadmill may not be an option for your cat, but there certainly are ways to keep your cat slim and healthy. Here are some easy tips to ensure a good workout for your indoor cat:

Stop the kitty treats – A lot of owners will have some guilt if they stop giving treats to their cats. However, there are other ways to reward your kitty, food is not the only option.

Use a laser pointer – Studies have shown that cats love laser lights! The constant movement is irresistible to cats and they’ll bounce after the ever-moving light. Remember never to shine the laser in your cat’s eyes, as it can cause damage.

Give you cat something to jump on – Cats generally love being up high so they can observe their surroundings. Get your cat a kitty condo that they can jump on! You can also leave shelves open, cabinets open, or things to run through such as boxes.

Try a new trick- Keep the bowls of water and food away from each other. So that while moving from one bowl to another your cat exercises and burns calories.

Food move technique – At feeding time move your cat’s food containers from one area to another, forcing her to move from one point to another. Treating your cat while moving her food around is essential, and will keep her interested in the game.

Use ordinary objects that grabs your cat’s attention – Cats love regular household objects such as straws, milk rings, balled up paper, and paper bags. Put these out around your house, your cat should be stimulated by them.

Weight control/loss food – I currently have my kitty Lucy on weight control food by EVO. This has fewer calories, fat, and carbohydrates than regular dry food. Please stay away from Science Diet, it has ingredients that are not healthy for your cat.

Follow these few simple tips and you will have an happy, healthy cat.
