Keeping Your Pets Safe in the Summer Heat

Summer has come to the Charlotte area, and one thing that a lot of people don’t think about is how the heat can affect your beloved animals. Here are some tips for dealing with the heat, and also warning signs:

1) Never leave your pet in a car when you run errands. The temperature in a car can get to around 120 degrees in a matter of minutes, even when your car is in the shade. If you see a pet alone in a hot car, alert the manager of the store or place you are going, and have them make an announcement. If at all possible, leave your pets at home during days of extreme heat.

2) Pets need exercise even when it is hot, but limit the exercise to morning and evening hours when the heat is not as severe. Also limit the length of time your pets are exposed to the sun.

3) Pets can get sunburned too, so you may want to apply sunscreen to a pet’s nose and ear tips, especially if they are light in color. Pets can develop skin cancer as well.

4) Do not take your pets to crowded outdoor festivals such as concerts and fairs. The heat, noise, and commotion is very stressful for your pet, and can also be dangerous.

If your pet is exposed to high temperatures:

a) Look for warning signs such as heavy panting, glazed eyes, staggering, vomiting, and a deep red/purple tongue.

b) If your pet becomes overheated, immediately move them to a shaded area and run cool water over their body.

c) Apply ice packs to your pet’s head, neck, and chest.

d) Have your pet lick ice cubes and/or drink small amounts of cool water.

Finally, take your pet to the veterinarian immediately!

Your pet is like family, take care of it during the hot summer months!!!
